The job of the food photographer can be very satisfying for the creative person who is familiar with close-up photography. Food photography is a specialised type of commercial still-life work where the subject is food and the objective is to make it look as pleasing and appetizing as possible. Attractive pictures of food that create a desire to consume them are much in demand for use in advertising, on menus, and on packaging.
Strictly speaking the food photographer takes the pictures after the food stylist has set up the actual food arrangement, but sometimes the food photographer will do both jobs.
The arrangement of the food items on a plate, along with a sauce, and possibly garnishings, can make a tremendous difference to the way the dish appears. Soft lighting or extreme angles are just a couple of tricks sometimes employed to get a certain visual effect. Others include selective focus, spraying foods with water to make them look fresh and moist, or artificially creating the appearance of steam over a sizzling dish. Sometimes browning or other colouring agents may be used to alter the colour of food to make it look more attractive, or substitutes such as shaving foam for soft ice-cream employed.
